Do you have a nose for news? Does media and advertising interest you? Do you want to know how they both affect society? If so, you might be interested in earning a communication degree. Communication degrees are very versatile. Many reporters, broadcasters, radio personalities, advertising agents, and college professors start out with undergraduate communications degrees.
As a communication major, you will be exposed to many different aspects of communications including print media, broadcast media, radio, and internet media. You will probably also have to take speech and rhetoric classes. You will ultimately learn how to recognize messages you see in various types of media, and understand the various types of persuasion used in presenting those messages.
If you ultimately want to be a print or broadcast reporter, you will probably need to earn both a communications degree and a graduate degree in journalism. Communication majors can often find a job after graduation at a corporate media relations department. Corporate media relations departments usually put out press releases when their parent company has an announcement to make, and they also field questions from reporters who want to know something about the company, or about someone working in the company.
Now that you know a little bit more about what a communications degree can do for you, you can better decide whether you want to major in communications when you go back to school. If so, look into schools in your area that offer communications degrees, and try to get a sense of which programs look the most promising.
